Sheet Weight Calculator

Calculate the weight of MS, GI, CR, HR or stainless steel sheets in kg. Enter the sheet size and thickness, or pick a gauge (SWG), and get the weight of one sheet and the total for your order. The default is a standard 8 × 4 ft sheet.

Based on steel density 7.85 g/cm³. GI sheets carry a thin zinc coating, so real GI weight is slightly higher than the bare steel figure.

Sheet Weight Formula

Weight (kg) = Length (m) × Width (m) × Thickness (mm) × 7.85

For an 8 × 4 ft sheet, the area is 1.2192 m × 2.4384 m = 2.973 m². So weight = 2.973 × thickness (mm) × 7.85 = 23.34 kg per mm of thickness.

Example: an 18 gauge (1.22 mm) 8 × 4 sheet weighs 2.973 × 1.22 × 7.85 = 28.47 kg.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the weight of an 8 × 4 MS sheet?

An 8 × 4 ft MS sheet weighs about 23.34 kg for every mm of thickness. A 1 mm sheet weighs 23.34 kg, a 1.6 mm sheet about 37.35 kg and a 2 mm sheet about 46.68 kg.

What is the weight of an 18 gauge sheet?

18 SWG is 1.22 mm thick. It weighs 9.58 kg per m², so an 8 × 4 ft sheet weighs about 28.47 kg.

What is the weight of a 16 gauge sheet?

16 SWG is 1.63 mm thick and weighs 12.80 kg per m². An 8 × 4 ft sheet weighs about 38.04 kg.

How do I calculate GI sheet weight?

Use the same formula as MS: length (m) × width (m) × thickness (mm) × 7.85. Add a little for the zinc coating if you need a closer figure.

How do I calculate stainless steel sheet weight?

Choose "Stainless Steel 304" in the calculator, or use 7.93 in place of 7.85 in the formula.

What is the thickness of 20 gauge and 22 gauge sheet?

20 SWG is 0.914 mm and 22 SWG is 0.711 mm thick.
