Steel Weight Formula
Every steel weight calculation is the same idea: weight = cross-section area × length × density. Steel has a density of 7,850 kg/m³ (7.85 g/cm³). For a section measured in millimetres, weight per meter is:
Handy shortcuts for common shapes:
| Shape | Weight per meter (kg/m) |
|---|---|
| Round bar / rod / TMT | D² ÷ 162 |
| Round pipe | (OD − t) × t × 0.02466 |
| Plate / flat bar | Width × Thickness × 0.00785 |
| Square bar | Side² × 0.00785 |
| Square / rectangular pipe | (2A + 2B − 4t) × t × 0.00785 (approx.) |
| Angle | (A + B − t) × t × 0.00785 |
| Channel | (H × tw + 2 × (B − tw) × tf) × 0.00785 |
All sizes in mm. For other metals, multiply the steel result by (metal density ÷ 7.85).
Density of Common Metals
| Metal | Density (g/cm³) | Density (kg/m³) |
|---|---|---|
| Mild steel / MS / GI | 7.85 | 7,850 |
| Stainless steel 304 | 7.93 | 7,930 |
| Stainless steel 316 | 7.98 | 7,980 |
| Aluminium | 2.70 | 2,700 |
| Copper | 8.96 | 8,960 |
| Brass | 8.50 | 8,500 |
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I calculate steel weight in kg?
Multiply the cross-section area in mm² by the length in meters and by 0.00785. For example, a 50 × 6 mm flat bar is 300 mm², so it weighs 300 × 0.00785 = 2.355 kg per meter.
What is the formula for steel rod weight?
Weight per meter of a round steel bar is D² ÷ 162, where D is the diameter in mm. A 12 mm rod weighs 144 ÷ 162 = 0.888 kg per meter.
What is the density of steel?
Mild steel has a density of 7,850 kg/m³, which is 7.85 g/cm³. Stainless steel 304 is about 7.93 g/cm³.
How do I calculate steel weight per foot?
Calculate the weight per meter, then multiply by 0.3048. For example, 0.888 kg/m × 0.3048 = 0.271 kg per foot for a 12 mm rod.
Are these weights exact?
They are theoretical weights based on nominal sizes and density. Real steel can be slightly heavier or lighter because of rolling tolerance, so always confirm with your supplier for billing.
